Homemade Cough Syrup to Remove Phlegm from the Lungs

The aforementioned productive cough is accompanied with sensation of tightness of the chest, whistle or wheezing sound while breathing, feeling of mucus built up in the airway or chest, and coughing up phlegm. Wet or productive cough occurs as a result of an accumulation of thick mucus. The mucus can appear in three colors: yellow, green, and white, and all of them are expelled by coughing. Anything that bothers you and that it shouldn’t be in the lungs is usually followed by a cough in order to be cleared out. This is a normal body response to foreign particles. Consider the following symptoms of a productive cough:

● Excessive coughing in the mornings
● Persistent cough
● Sensation of tightness
● Congestion or heaviness in the chest
● Whistling sound when coughing or breathing
● Sticky phlegm that is expelled by coughing
It was already mentioned above that the phlegm may of different colors. It is really important to pay attention to the color in order to learn what triggers the cough itself:

Yellow Phlegm: It occurs due to an immune response to inflammation in the airways.
Green Phlegm: This color of the phlegm indicates a serious bacterial infection, such as bronchitis.
Clear or Transparent Phlegm: This is the normal type of phlegm.
Pink Phlegm: It occurs as a result of asthmatics.
Brown Phlegm: This type of phlegm is associated with air pollution or smog.
Gray Phlegm: This one is caused by cigarette smoke.

This recipe is an amazing way to remove the mucus from your lungs. Most important, it is safe for children as well. You will need the following ingredients:

● One cup of water
● One cup of brown sugar
● One lemon cut into slices
● A spoonful of sage
● One tablespoon of marshmallow root
● One tablespoon of flaxseed

Combine the water and sugar, put them in a saucepan and bring the mixture to boil. Cook until the sugar melts. Then, add the rest of the ingredients, mix well and remove the saucepan from the stove. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then strain the liquid. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar with tight lid. Keep it refrigerated so that you avoid spoilage. You should drink one tablespoon of this syrup three times on daily basis, until the condition improves.

In addition to the cough syrup described above, you can also benefit a lot from other natural recipes for removing phlegm (the white colored, milder type) when coughing.

Remedy with Onion
The onion is known for its numerous health benefits. For instance, it provides disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties, especially when it comes to the respiratory tract. You can use it many ways to treat a cough with phlegm. Cutting it in half and smelling the aroma directly is the simplest way. Moreover, you can make your own onion tea very easy. Just add onions into four cups of boiled water and bring the mixture to boil. Let it cool, strain the liquid and sweeten it with lemon, ginger, and a bit of honey. Consume three cups of the tea on daily basis.

Remedy with Garlic
Just as the above mentioned onion, this vegetable is another of the allies for people with respiratory issues. Garlic acts as a natural antibiotic thanks to the many valuable compounds it contains. You can also use it in many ways, such as making a tea out of it just as the one with onion described above, or cutting a clove and eating it raw alone or in salads.

Remedy with Vaporizers
This one is one of the oldest and one of the most effective home remedies for removing phlegm from your lungs. Put a pot of water to boil. When it is at a rapid boil, bring the face near it, cover the head with a towel and make the vapors. You can either make the vapors with water only or you can add a handful of coarse salt or some medicinal herbs beneficial for respiratory problems, such as sage, mint, thyme, elderberry, and eucalyptus.

Remedy with Milk and Ginger
All you need is a glass of warm milk and a small slice of ginger root. The ginger has expectorant properties and adding the warm milk helps in the elimination of phlegm that bothers you. Just mix the two ingredients and drink it before it gets cold. It is recommended to consume it before bedtime, as it helps you breathe better and fall asleep easier.

Remedy with Honey and Pepper
Both honey and pepper have strong expectorant properties, which in turn help in expelling the phlegm by coughing. Just mix one tablespoon of honey with a pinch of ground black pepper and take two times on daily basis.
