Your body can ingest nutrients a number of ways. I mean, obviously you can ingest them, nice and simple, or, in a rarer and slightly more complicated science-y type way, you can absorb some nutrients through the skin. But you’re skin is sensitive (or at least mine is) and you can’t just rub things onto your skin willy-nilly. However, there’s something to be said for taking nutrients in through the skin (which, by the by is called ‘transdermal therapy’) since your body rarely absorbs more than it needs through the skin.

But one of these ‘good for you’ nutrients you can get through your skin is magnesium. Now, whenever I think about magnesium, I certainly do not think about a nutrient, I think about a metal compound I’ve seen on a Table of the Elements. But like most things I never really give any thought too, magnesium is essential to your body’s health (other things I never think about are why the sky is blue instead of violet and why I have such a phobia of committed relationships). In fact in ranks in the top 5 of necessary things you have to have. And most of us are deficient.

Do I Have a Magnesium Deficiency?
You might be deficient if you’re thirstier than other people. Thirst can indicate an imbalance or lack of electrolytes or nutrients. You need magnesium because it helps in so many areas of our physical well-being. Magnesium helps cofactor for more than 300 enzyme reactions in your body. It’s needed for the relaxation of muscles, and for stable blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. It’s vital for cardiovascular health, key for balancing hormones, and essential for mood regulation, particularly reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of well-being.
Now the recipe I’m offering you today is called “magnesium oil” but it’s not an oil at all. It’s just slippery to the touch. It’s made with magnesium flakes and water. Super, duper simple, and super duper cost-effective.

Magnesium Oil Recipe

■ 1/2 cup filtered water
■ 1/2 cup magnesium chloride flakes
■ Spray bottle

1. Bring the water to a boil in a non-aluminum saucepan. Turn off the heat and stir in the magnesium flakes until dissolved. When cool, pour into your spray bottle. No refrigeration is necessary.
2. Spray it on to the body and lightly rub it in. It is fully absorbed without a residue within a few minutes.
1. Use anywhere from 10-30 sprays per day.

A few notes on using magnesium oil:
■ It stings. Some people call it a ‘tingle’, they are liars.Try spritzing it on less sensitive areas. Everyone is different but pick places that have more fat (comparitively) than harder surfaces on your body.
■ Don’t and I mean DON’T apply this to any recently exfoliated area. That includes recently shaved or waxed places. It burns like the Dickens.
■ Don’t wash your magnesium oil off. Spray it on after your shower once you’ve towelled dry.

Uses for magnesium oil include:
Sports injury, muscles cramps, beach waves in your hair, helping with PMS symptoms,  improving sleep quality, releases or reduces stress, helpful for headaches.
